Hm, well i drew them with a ruler...and my watercolor technique is pretty controlled.. maybe smaller brushes can help you, and less water.
The texture is made by sprinkling salt on moist paint. Give it a try, its super-fun.

I've tried using less water but ends up looking pretty streaky. I use cheap watercolors though. Does that make a difference?

Oh. In my opinion the paper and paints make all the difference in the world.
Mine are the fancy russian White Nights, but i suppose there's a large gray area of less fancy but still quality paints.
